Tracing the Beautiful and The Violent Mind

Sole witness to Berta Cáceres murder – Amnesty International

Berta Caceres

Berta died just after midnight on 3 March, minutes after being shot. Her murder shines a spotlight on the risks faced by thousands of people who work to defend human rights and the environment in Honduras. According to the organization Global Witness, Honduras is the deadliest and most dangerous country in the world for environmental activists – 109 of whom have been killed between 2010 and 2015.

The leader and co-founder of the Council of Indigenous Peoples of Honduras (COPINH), Berta Cáceres had spent decades campaigning against projects that threatened local communities and their rights.

Munich Gunman Portrayed as Having Planned Attack for a Year – NYT

Ali Sonboly, 18, received inpatient treatment for depression in 2015, frequented the “darknet” and had no apparent political motivation, German officials said.

The gunman, who was the 18-year-old son of Iranian immigrant parents and held both German and Iranian citizenship, had sought refuge in the internet, where he immersed himself in a violent video game and the so-called darknet of encrypted networks, through which the authorities suspect that he acquired the pistol used to carry out the attack.

Years Before Truck Rampage in Nice, Attacker Wasn’t ‘Living in the Real World’ -NYT

Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who killed 84 people in France, had long displayed a propensity for violence, and his life appears to show how the unstable have latched on to Islamic State propaganda.

When his wife was observing the Muslim monthlong period of fasting and abstinence during Ramadan, he poured alcohol on her head to humiliate her. Around the same time, he stabbed one of his children’s toys with a knife. His wife became fearful for her children and sought a divorce.

Merkel deplores ‘night of horror’ | Daily Telegraph

GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel has spoken out about the deadly shooting in Munich which left nine dead, saying the city had suffered a “night of horror”.

  • Ali Sonboly shot nine people, including kids, before killing himself
  • He acted alone at the Olympia shopping centre McDonald’s
  • 27 others were also injured, 10 severely injured, one is a 13yr old
  • He hacked Facebook to lure kids, was under psychological treatment
  • He kept a stash of books on shooting rampages in his room

GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel has spoken out about the deadly shooting in Munich which left nine dead, saying the city had suffered a “night of horror”.

“The people of Munich have come through a night of horror,” she said in her first reaction to Friday’s carnage, adding: “A night like this is difficult for us all to bear.”

It comes as the Munich gunman’s identity was revealed as 18-year-old as Ali David Sonboly.

Police seized disturbing books and a computer from his room after he hacked a Facebook account to lure kids to his shooting rampage.

Munich police president Hubertus Andrae said Sonboly killed himself and acted alone but he was not a refugee. He was born and raised in Munich and was a local student who had been receiving psychological treatment for depression.

So far, “no evidence” has been found to link him to Islamic State. However, police found documents and books in his room linked to shootings and “rampages”.

They said Sonboly did not appear to have any political motivation, and the incident appeared to be a “classic shooting rampage” and not terrorism. The suspect had been obsessed with books and articles about mass killings “linked to maniacs”. They say he was “obsessed” with mass shootings.

Prosecutor Steinkraus Koch told a press conference the suspect had a book titled: “Rampage in Head: Why Students Kill.”

He had a single gunshot wound to the head. He was armed with a 9mm Glock pistol and 300 rounds of ammunition in his bag.

They are also investigating his computer and said they were “evaluating this data in the finest detail”.

Police have been unable to interview his parents as they have been too distraught to talk.

Munich police investigator Robert Heimberger said it appears that the shooter hacked a Facebook account and sent a message urging people to come to the mall for a free giveaway.

The posting, sent from a young woman’s account, urged people to come to the shopping centre at 4pm, saying: “I’ll give you something if you want, but not too expensive.” Heimberger said: “It appears it was prepared by the suspect and then sent out.” The woman shortly after reported that her account had been hacked.

Among the victims are three females and seven males are among the dead, aged 15 to 45. All victims live in the local area, and there were no tourists included in the death toll. Three Kosovans and Turks and one Greek are also among the victims.

GUNMAN’S LINKS TO NORWEGIAN SHOOTER

German investigators have established an “obvious link” between Friday’s shooting at a Munich mall and far-right Norwegian killer Anders Behring Breivik, the city’s police chief said at a press conference Saturday.

“The link is obvious,” said Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae, describing the gunman as obsessed with mass killings.

He added that he researched the theme of rampages and may have researched Breivik’s lethal killing spree.

Friday’s carnage came on the fifth anniversary of right-wing fanatic Breivik’s massacre in Norway that killed 77 people, many of them youngsters.
